The Fed will make fewer rate decisions in 2027, giving markets more to sweat over

The Warsh Fed's taciturn nature has already raised the stakes for each FOMC meeting. With fewer hints or forward guidance about what the Fed is thinking and planning comes more suspense.
And next year, those stakes will be even higher as the Fed removes a rate decision from its calendar, making each meeting even more important and potentially adding another layer of uncertainty and volatility to markets.
At the October policy meeting on Wednesday, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh announced this major change to the Fed's calendar and added that 2028 might feature only six rate decisions. The meetings themselves will remain on the calendar, but instead of the Fed debating rates, broader monetary policy topics will be on the agenda.
The Wednesday meeting saw the Fed hold rates steady, but two dissenting governors wanted a hike.
Warsh said the reasoning behind the schedule change is to "reserve the time and space as an intellectually diverse group for strategic deliberations, for thinking anew about big questions, looking out over longer time horizons."
We've all been wondering how the newly installed chair would reshape the Fed. Already, he's been doing that by changing the nature of the Fed's public communication.
"I don't believe in forward guidance," Warsh said on Wednesday. His remarks echoed his move earlier this year to end the years-long practice of offering forward guidance — removing an important signal for Wall Street and Main Street alike.
Warsh himself has not contributed a "dot" to the central bank's quarterly chart showing where individual policymakers expect short-term interest rates to go, and he doesn't plan to do so.
Now the Fed will also have fewer decisions to discuss.

In its decision to hold rates steady this month, the Fed said that while inflation remains high, it wanted to gather more information before making another decision to change rates.
The Fed also noted that while there was uncertainty, the US economy remained resilient.
Warsh acknowledged that inflation remained too high, but noted that there were other signs - such as tightening credit conditions - that the economy was moving in the right direction.
There is plenty more economic data to come between now and the committee's next meeting, the Fed chair added, which should paint a more detailed picture of the state of the economy.
At that point, Warsh said, "we'll be, I think, better positioned to determine the right policy decision and the stance of policy."
While last month the committee signalled there could be one more rate rise this year, Warsh would not be drawn out on where he thinks they will go in six weeks' time.
"A lot of things can happen, so I'm not going to be able to share with you my musings."
The decision to hold rates steady was not unanimous.
While 10 of the 12 committee members voted to keep rates unchanged, Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack voted to increase rates to 4%-4.25%, from its current 3.75%-4%.
The bank's next meeting will be held over 8-9 December.

Anthropic has introduced new reporting tools aimed at enhancing transparency for companies utilizing AI workflows. The tools, which became generally available on October 28, help businesses track the cost, output, and performance of their AI operations. This launch is part of Anthropic’s broader strategy to make its enterprise AI product, Claude Enterprise, more measurable and governable. The development comes as the company, valued at $965 billion earlier this year, is reportedly considering an IPO with a valuation target of up to $2 trillion.
Key Takeaways
Anthropic’s new reporting tools appear to align with its strategy to increase enterprise adoption by providing transparency into AI workflows.
The market reaction suggests that these developments may be consistent with increased investor confidence, potentially supporting a higher valuation.
Current market pricing reflects a 74% likelihood that Anthropic’s valuation will reach $2 trillion by December 31, indicating optimism among participants.
What to Watch
With Anthropic’s valuation closely watched, further announcements regarding new funding rounds or strategic partnerships would be critical indicators for market participants. Significant enterprise contracts or advancements in AI capabilities could further support scenarios where Anthropic’s valuation increases. Conversely, any delays in strategic initiatives or negative media coverage may impact market expectations and valuations.

US Fed holds interest rates at 3.75%-4% as inflation persists, signals scope for further hikes
The US Federal Reserve held interest rates unchanged at 3.75%-4% in a 10-2 vote, as policymakers weighed persistent inflation against a resilient economy and waited for further data before deciding their next move. The decision came ahead of next week’s US midterm elections, with the central bank acknowledging that inflation remains elevated despite signs of continued economic strength.Fed Chair Kevin Warsh said economic activity was expanding at a “strong” pace, upgrading the Fed’s assessment from “solid” at its September meeting. Domestic spending remained resilient, productivity growth was strong, investment robust and job gains had kept pace with the workforce, while the unemployment rate had changed little. However, inflation continues to run above the Fed’s 2% target, leaving policymakers divided over whether monetary policy needs to tighten further.Governors Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack dissented from the decision, favouring a 25-basis-point rate hike. Their position reflects concerns that inflationary pressures remain persistent and that delaying further tightening could make it harder to bring price increases under control. Some economists and market participants have also suggested that another rate hike could come in December, although the Fed has not committed to a specific course.Warsh said the central bank needed more information to determine the appropriate policy stance, stressing that tackling inflation could not be tied to a fixed date or a single data point. He added that inflation expectations had moved in the right direction since the Fed’s September policy action, while financial and credit conditions had tightened for some businesses and households. However, he said he was unwilling to describe overall financial conditions as tight.Markets reacted cautiously to the decision. US stock indexes were mixed, Treasury yields edged higher and short-term interest rate futures rose, reflecting uncertainty over the path of monetary policy. The Fed’s statement leaves the possibility of further rate increases open if inflation fails to ease, even as policymakers acknowledge that employment and economic activity remain relatively strong.
