Sept 15 : Hong Kong-based crypto exchange CoinEx said on Tuesday it would shut down, citing a prolonged downturn in crypto markets as well as rising security and compliance costs.
CoinEx said it would gradually cease services from September 15, with withdrawals remaining available until December 22.
Weak cryptocurrency markets, shrinking trading volumes and liquidity, and steadily rising regulatory requirements across major jurisdictions had all "exceeded reasonable boundaries", CoinEx said in a statement on its website.
"CoinEx did not become one of the industry's leading exchanges, and the security and compliance risks of running a crypto exchange have become increasingly difficult to contain," founder Haipo Yang said in a post on X.
Launched in 2017, CoinEx had "millions" of users, Yang said, without providing a precise figure.
A June report by U.S. crypto research company TRM Labs identified CoinEx as the largest single counterparty to Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex, which was placed under U.S. sanctions earlier that month for allegedly helping Iran circumvent Western sanctions.
TRM said trading volumes between CoinEx and Iranian exchanges fell after the U.S. imposed sanctions on several Iranian exchanges in June.
CoinEx did not respond to a Reuters request for comment about the TRM report or its alleged links to Iran, sent outside Hong Kong business hours.
In a statement on X in June in response to a Wall Street Journal report, CoinEx said it had never had a commercial relationship with Iranian government-linked entities or domestic Iranian exchanges. It added that it had stopped onboarding Iranian users after the sanctions were imposed.
Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, has fallen sharply this year, dropping about 50 per cent from its October 2025 peak of nearly $130,000 to around $60,000 in June.
A recent rebound driven by concerns about dollar debasement proved short-lived amid uncertainty over a potential Federal Reserve rate hike and the proposed U.S. Clarity Act, a key cryptocurrency bill.
Average daily bitcoin spot trading volume fell to about $2.2 billion in July, the lowest since November 2023, before declining further to around $1.8 billion in August, suggesting market participation had fallen to near three-year lows, according to digital asset manager ChainUp Investment.
CoinEx said it maintained an asset-reserve ratio above 100 per cent and that all customer assets were fully backed and available for withdrawal.

Crude oil all time high predictions
China’s oil throughput saw a notable increase in August, driven by a rebound in fuel exports against the backdrop of ongoing conflict in Iran. The resurgence in fuel exports indicates a heightened demand for oil, suggesting potential supply constraints as geopolitical tensions persist in the Middle East. This development comes as major oil producers and market observers closely monitor the situation, which could impact global oil supply and pricing dynamics.
Market participants appear to interpret the rise in China’s oil throughput as consistent with scenarios where crude oil might approach new all-time highs. Currently, the market pricing for crude oil reaching a new all-time high by September 30 remains low, with a 1.9% likelihood. However, the odds for such an event by December 31 have seen a significant increase, currently standing at 16.5%, suggesting that participants consider a longer timeframe for potential escalation of prices.

The situation remains fluid as key figures in the energy sector, including OPEC’s Secretary General Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, the IEA’s Executive Director Fatih Birol, and Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud, continue to assess the implications of the Iran conflict on oil markets. Their actions and statements could further influence market expectations in the coming weeks.
Key Takeaways
China’s increased oil throughput suggests growing demand and potential supply constraints amid the Iran war.
Market pricing for crude oil reaching a new all-time high by December 31 has increased to 16.5%, reflecting heightened anticipation of future price movements.
Key energy figures are closely monitoring the situation, which could lead to further shifts in market expectations.
What to Watch
Watch for any announcements from OPEC regarding production adjustments, as these could significantly impact market dynamics. Additionally, geopolitical developments in the Middle East, such as changes in the Iran conflict or peace negotiations, could alter market sentiment. The actions and statements from influential energy leaders will also be crucial in shaping market participants’ expectations about future oil price movements.

A new dynamic-fee mechanism launched five days ago is already dominating Ethereum trading volume by offering better returns for liquidity providers
Uniswap’s new StablePair Hook, deployed on the Ethereum mainnet on September 10, has already claimed the top spot as the highest-volume pool on the network. Five days. That’s all it took for a single liquidity pool to outpace every other pool on Ethereum’s busiest decentralized exchange.
How the StablePair Hook actually works
Traditional automated market makers use a constant-product formula to price assets. That’s a problem for stablecoin pairs, where USDC and USDT should almost always be worth the same thing.
Gloria Ask anything about any stock — Gloria Finance gives you a complete, data-backed answer in seconds. Ask Gloria →
The StablePair Hook adjusts fees dynamically based on how far the pool’s price has drifted from a defined reference rate. Within a narrow band around that reference, bid/ask spreads stay tight and predictable.

When a trade pushes the price further away from equilibrium, the fee starts high and then decays block by block, functioning like a Dutch auction. Traders who push the price back toward the reference rate pay zero fees.
The hook launched with two initial pools, USDC/USDT and USDC/USDG, both built to take advantage of this mechanism. The USDC/USDT pool is the one that rocketed to the top of Ethereum’s volume charts.

Uniswap’s stablecoin dominance by the numbers
Uniswap processed $43.4 billion in stablecoin-to-stablecoin swaps during Q2 2026 alone. That figure surpassed the next three on-chain trading venues combined.
Controlled deployment, not permissionless
Uniswap Labs is keeping the keys on this one. New StablePair Hook pools can only be created by Uniswap Labs itself through a controlled initializePool function. The parameters governing these pools are recorded within the hook’s architecture and can be modified through Uniswap’s governance protocol.
This makes the StablePair Hook the first upgradeable dynamic-fee hook from Uniswap, a distinction that matters for a protocol that has historically favored immutable smart contracts. The hook’s contract sits at address 0x0000113dCf4ADd69999Fad8F20F2b63F979bfcC0 on Ethereum mainnet.

The rupee depreciated 30 paise to 95.84 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday on elevated Brent crude oil prices and heightened Middle East tensions.
With Brent crude touching $106 per barrel, increased dollar demand from oil importers raised concerns over India's external balance and inflation, forex traders said.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.84 against the US dollar, registering a loss of 30 paise from its previous close.
On Friday, the rupee had settled at 95.54 against the American currency. Forex and equity markets were closed on Monday on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.
The surge in crude oil prices and heightened tensions in the Middle East have increased safe-haven demand for the dollar and pushed US Treasury yields higher, said Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading at 99.60 higher by 0.21 per cent.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading higher by 1.19 per cent at $106.94 per barrel in futures trade, amid escalating US-Iran tensions and fears of disruption to oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Sensex climbed 233.66 points to 75,022.37 in early trade while Nifty rose 63.85 points to 23,462.30.
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹930.90 crore on a net basis on Friday, according to exchange data.

CoinEx said falling trading volumes and liquidity, along with rising regulatory and compliance costs, had exceeded “reasonable boundaries,” with withdrawals remaining open until Dec. 22.
Crypto exchange CoinEx said it is winding down operations, citing a prolonged crypto market downturn, sinking trading volumes and liquidity, and rising regulatory and compliance costs, according to an announcement on Tuesday.
As part of the wind-down, CoinEx will halt new user registrations, referral commissions and other rewards. Futures contracts will enter a “Reduce-Only” mode. CoinEx will also stop accepting new orders or subscriptions across its fiat, margin trading, lending, earn, staking and strategic trading services.
“After much reflection, I have come to accept a hard truth. CoinEx did not become one of the industry’s leading exchanges, and the security and compliance risks of running a crypto exchange have become increasingly difficult to contain,” CoinEx CEO Haipo Yang said in a post on X.
The closure adds to a wave of crypto exchanges that have ceased operations this year for similar reasons, including BitMart, BitMEX and AscendEX.
From Sept. 22, CoinEx will discontinue all non-spot services and onchain deposits, with the exception of CET deposits.
From Sept. 29, all spot trading services will be discontinued, and non-USDT assets will be processed.
From Dec. 22, the withdrawal period will end, and the platform will cease operations. Any unwithdrawn USDT will be transferred to an independent custodian, which will incur a monthly custody fee.
CoinEx will also buy back CET at its initial listing price of 0.005 USDT per token, a slightly higher price than it was on Monday before the announcement.

CoinEx Wallet and CoinEx Vault will remain fully operational, as they operate independently of the exchange.
CoinEx was launched in December 2017 by crypto mining pool ViaBTC. The crypto exchange is ranked 33rd with $58 million in 24-hour trading volume, according to CoinMarketCap.
